Review of Chapter 7

I think I related to Holden Caulfield in this chapter, more than any other time. I see him as being very vulnerable after the fight between him and Stradlater. He has no one to talk to really, nowhere to go. Yeah he turns to Ackley, but I think, deep down, he doesn't really want to turn to anybody. He calls Ackley a "Prince" and a "true gentleman" and says he's sincere when he says it, which really means a lot to me. It means that he can stop criticising for a second and let Ackley know how he truly feels towards him.

Holden also talks about feeling very lonesome. And I can relate to that; immensely. He says that whenever he thinks about a certain thing he just gets sad and I totally get that. I appreciate how honest he is with his feelings. Yeah he can be brutally honest, and a bit of a jerk, but at least he's also truthful about bad feelings he has and doesn't try to hide them.

Review of Chapter 6

In this chapter I've learned how much pride Holden has. Even when he's getting his ass handed to him by Stradlater, he still has the nerve to insult him. This chapter also showed me that Holden is sensitive when it comes to his little brother, specifically writing about his baseball glove. I can also see that Holden reacts on an impulse and won't let any thing stop him. Once he gets heated, and angry, there's nothing that can stop him. Holden has a range of emotions constantly changing inside him that he definitely needs help controlling.

Review of Chapter 5

In this chapter I'm starting to realize how critical Holden is of everybody. Yeah he's honest, which is a good thing, but he totally puts up a front when he's talking to someone he doesn't really like. I'm sort of starting to think he doesn't mean to be this way. That's just how he is; rude and brutally honest. For example, Holden is always talking bad about Ackley, but when he goes to hang out with Mal, he invites Ackley along. I guess he sort of feels bad. He didn't have to do that.

In class today Erika and I were noticing that when Holden is talking about his brother, Allie, he doesn't cuss. Which made that part more enjoyable to read. I guess that's why he didn't cuss. Because he doesn't want any distractions and because thats him being real. He has nothing but great things to say about him. You can definitely tell he has a soft spot for his brother.

Review of Chapter 4

In chapter four I have begun to realize and appreciate how much description Holden uses. Holden also remembers a lot of details. Like when Stradlater brings up him having a date with Jane, that instantly triggers a range of emotion and remembrance for Holden. He couldn't stop thinking about her. I'm going to make a prediction that Holden is in love with Jane. Shocking, I know.

Conversations about chapter 3

On Wednesday in class, my group read all of chapter three together (Mollee read to us) and we made a lot of realizations about the main character. I said that Holden has a lot on his mind all the time. Mollee and I were noticing that while Holden is talking to Ackley, he is distracted by his appearance or by things around him. He could be having a conversation with someone and be telling us, the reader, something that has nothing to do with his conversation but rather, things he noticed while he was talking

ALL THAT DAVID COPPERFIELD KIND OF CRAP

So far in Catcher in the Rye, we've learned that the main character, Holden, is getting kicked out of a very prestigious and crook-oriented school. He seems to kind of put up a front. To everything. To us the reader, that he has "been through some stuff" and to his history teacher, Mr. Spencer. He seems close to his teacher, Mr. Spencer, or at least he wants to be. Holden goes over to his house to say a last goodbye (because he's being kicked out of pencey prep) and while he's talking to his teacher, his mind is in a different place.

He is confused. He seems like a charismatic, rebel sort of teenager whom you want to learn more about. He always has his mind on something else but never speaks his mind. He wants to do things for himself and he definitely has a lot of opinions.

First Impressions: The Catcher in the Rye

My first impressions of The Catcher in the Rye were that it would be an easy read, and I will feel accomplished after reading it. I'm very interested in the main character in that I want to know more about his personality and how he will grow in the book. The book is written just as though the narrator is talking right to you, and speaking out loud. I'm excited to see what Holden will do or tell me about.

NEXT STEPS

  • My topic for the masterpiece in our class is Film. But I want to add to it. I want to add theater, comedy, directing and cinematography.
  • I became interested in my topic when I was very young. Ever since I was little I've always been making home videos with my siblings and cousins. So film has always been an interest to me. Also when I was younger I would always want to be in the spotlight and I liked to act, so that's how I got turned on to theater/ acting. Directing and cinematography go hand in hand for me. I think it was when I first saw Little Miss Sunshine. That movie made me want to pursue a career in film industry. It made me want to act on screen and it peaked my interest to directing and cinematography.
  • My topic will enrich my life and my community by telling stories and by portraying characters in order to tell stories.
  • The academic discipline my topic suggests is basic film, learning editing, theater and those are all things I've learned here at school but I still want to enhance my storytelling and my writing.
  • I honestly have no idea how I am going to start learning more about my topic.
  • Some resources I need are a camera to film and people in the know so I can get my start. I want to direct a film and enter it into film festivals. That's how I want to get my start.

MUSIC AS LITERATURE

1.) Can we consider music to be literature?

-Yes we do consider music as literature because it is. It tells a story and is written as literature. It's kind of demeaning to not consider music as literature

2.) How do we define literature?

- We define literature as written works, books and writing on a specific subject.

3.) What's the difference between a novel, a poem, a rap, a song, an opera, a symphony?

- The only difference between all of these is the way they're individually construed. You can't dance to a book, and you can't rap a symphony. They're all differently put out but they're works of art and are all literature.
